A team game report: GF 3-1 Broadalbin-Perth

Friday September 28
Glens Falls 3-1 Broadalbin-Perth

Glens Falls came from behind with three second half goals to beat Broadalbin-Perth 3-1. The A team struggled to gain any rhythm in the first half against a talented BP squad. BP scored a goal shortly before halftime to take a 1-0 lead in the interval. However, the Indians came roaring out in the 2nd half and did a much better job of spreading the field out and scored almost immediately. In the first minute after the break, Matt Parsons played a ball to Jake Jacobs who made a nice little flick to Carl Sopczyk who slotted past the keeper to equalize. This goal marked Sopczyk's 15th career modified goal, breaking the A team record. The Indians piled on the pressure in the 4th quarter, generating 8 shots on net. Midway through the quarter, Taylor DelSignore played a through ball to Sopczyk who crossed to Nate Spilman who crushed the ball into the net. Spilman sealed the game late as he scored off another Sopczyk assist. A solid second half for Glens Falls, though they'll need to play well for 60 minutes against South High on Monday.

SCORING

51'-Nate Spilman (Sopczyk)
57'-Spilman (Sopczyk)

SAVES: Taylor DelSignore 2, Ryan Montgomery 4

A team game report: Johnstown 0-8 GF

Wednesday September 26
Johnstown 0-8 Glens Falls

At long last, the A team found its stride and played excellent soccer in crushing Johnstown 8-0. After a first quarter, Matt Parsons opened a scoring with an assist from Nate Spilman, his first of three. Carl Sopczyk scored shortly before halftime with a header of a Spilman cross. Seconds later, Parsons took advantage of a poor keeper clearance by hitting it into the open net. Christian Conklin capped off a fantastic game by putting a free kick through the wall and into the net. Kyle McMurtry had a pair of opportunistic goals and Jake Jacobs had a nice finish as well to round out the scoring. Evan McLaughlin did good work up top to set up a pair of goals. Keepers Ryan Montgomery and Taylor DelSignore split the shutout while Billy McMahon and Mike Kowalski had another stand out game in front of them. If the A team continues to play like this, they should have a fantastic season.

Note: ' means minute and () mean assist so Parsons (Spilman) 21' means Parsons scored in the 21st minute with an assist from Spilman.

What soccer players should eat and drink and how much

The GF varsity soccer blog has a good article on proper nutrition and hydration for soccer players.

An excerpt:

[Sports drinks] can help to reduce the impact of dehydration.Although water and carbohydrate must be taken onboard, soccer players don't need to worry about replacing electrolytes during play. Sweat is a dilute fluid with low concentrations of electrolytes, and most players can obtain enough electrolytes - including salt - from their normal diets.

However, the presence of salt in a sports drink can enhance the absorption of water and glucose. Most commercial drinks have about the right concentration of sodium; if you're making your own beverage, you should be sure to mix about one-third tea spoon of salt and five to six tablespoons of sugar with each quart of water that you're going to be using.

After all matches, players should attempt to ingest enough carbohydrate-containing sports drink to replace all the fluid they've lost during competition. After strenuous workouts, water should also be replaced, and soccer athletes need to eat at least 500 calories of carbohydrate during the two hours following practice in order to maximize their rates of glycogen storage.

Skills tips: dribbling and receiving

Tips for basic dribbling with various surfaces of your foot:

Tips for receiving (formerly called trapping) the ball:

Saturday, September 8, 2007

Players must be properly equipped at all times

For safety (and thus legal) reasons, it's important that players are properly equipped at all times, including at practice.

Players should wear to PRACTICE:
-Soccer cleats
-Socks
-Shinguards (size appropriate)
-Shorts
-Red, black or white t-shirt

Over the years, I've often been asked by players if they have to wear shinguards during practice and the answer is YES. One of the worst injuries I ever received as a player was during a practice (and that was with shinguards... it would've been worse without). So players must wear shinguards if they want to practice. No exceptions.

Field players are required to wear to GAMES:
-Soccer cleats
-Black socks
-Shinguards (size appropriate)
-Black shorts
-Red, black or white t-shirt
-School-issued jersey: red for B team, red (away) or white (home) for A team

Additionally, players are not allowed to wear any ear (or other) rings, bracelets or necklaces during a game. They must be removed before the game. This includes the Livestrong and other rubber bracelets that are now popular. Referees will allow medical necklaces but they must be tucked inside the player's shirt and taped to his body.

Referees will no longer check player equipment prior to a game. If a player is sent off the field for not being properly equipped, both he and the coach will receive a yellow card.

If a second player does the same thing, the coach will receive a red card, be ejected from the game and, since there is no assistant coach, the game would be forfeited. He will also be suspended for the next game.

If a coach is carded for this reason, he will be EXTREMELY unhappy. Players are responsible for properly equipping themselves. Players are encouraged to remind their teammates out if they forget.

GOALKEEPERS are required to wear to GAME:
-All the same equipment as a field player...
-Except he must wear a different color jersey than the rest of his teammates and the opposing team
-He must wear a foam goalkeeper's helmet
-He must wear a mouthguard
-He is very strongly encouraged to wear goalkeeper gloves

The coaches will provide the helmet and can provide gloves and a mouthguard for keepers who need them.

Keepers should bring their gloves to all practices, but they don't need to bring the helmet or mouthguard to practice.

Goalkeepers are responsible for bringing their own equipment to games. If they don't, the team will forfeit because the game can not be played without a properly equipped keeper.

Keepers should also bring their regular team jersey (red for B team; away red or home white for A team) so they can play the field if they are not in goal.

Choosing the right cleat

Soccer America magazine had two good articles on how to buy the right cleat for your foot. Unfortunately, the full text of both articles (here and here) is only available to magazine subscribers.

But some of the key points...

Rule No. 1: Start with the best fit
The temptation as a parent purchasing cleats for a growing child with a growing foot is to buy cleats that are a bit too large, thinking that your child will "grow into them" and thereby save you some money in not having to buy another pair too soon.

The problem with that from a medical standpoint is that the foot will move too much in the shoe, which can lead to problems such as blisters, heel pain, and arch pain -- all of which lead to lost playing time.

[...]

The foot will function best if the shoe is purchased at the correct size now, with a sturdy and properly supportive heel counter, and a supportive arch.

Try the shoes on in the store with the thickness of sock you'll wear during training and games. Shoes with synthetic uppers will stay about the same size throughout their usage, but leather uppers will mold and adapt to foot contours over time (several weeks of use).

Rule No. 2: What Type of Foot Do You Have?
Wide feet: try Adidas or Kelme, and consider a leather upper.

Narrow feet: try Nike.

Neutral feet: You're in luck, you can wear almost any brand.

Rule No. 3: Know Your Field Conditions
If you are doing speed or agility training with no ball work: wear a running shoe.

Firm, reasonably well maintained grass field: Firm Ground Cleats (what most players will need in the fall)

Synthetic/Artificial Turf: Turf Shoe

Very Hard/Dirt Surface: Hard Ground Cleats

Soft or Wet Surface: Consider Soft Ground Cleats, although I think I see a higher number of knee injuries in players wearing soft ground cleats.
