Athletes should avoid energy drinks

Dealing with heat
With temperatures and heat indexes dangerously high, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America website has a good article on the importance of staying properly hydrated (drink lots of liquids and the right kinds... sodas, energy drinks and fruit juices are the wrong kind) in the heat and how to avoid serious heat related situations: click here to read more.

What to drink and the importance of sleep
Soccer America's youth soccer blog has two excellent articles.
The first is on the importance of sleep for all teenagers, especially athletes. (Click here for the article)
The other is on the importance of drinking fluids not only during, but before and after sporting events. It points out that athletes should NOT be drinking soda or energy drinks around sporting events. It adds that sports drinks like Gatorade are okay during sporting events but athletes should not be drinking them constantly throughout the day because of the calories they contain; water should be drunk during the day. (Click here for the article)
Additionally, this website now has a section devoted to information for kids and parents on player development. (Click here)

A note on injuries and rest
REST
Players are expected to work hard at practice. As a result, it's important that they take sufficient rest to allow their bodies time to recover. If this doesn't happen, players may become more easily injured. Players should make sure they take one day a week where they take it easy from physical activity.
INJURIES
Players should inform their coaches of any injury, however seemingly small. The coach will then determine if the player can continue or if he should rest or seek treatment. If a parent thinks that his son is hiding an injury, please inform the coach so he can determine the appropriate course of action. Do not hide your injury!
